History of The South Jersey Medical Association
The SJMA was founded as an organization by which African-American health professionals could meet to share professional experiences and fellowship. African Americans practicing the healing arts in South Jersey go back to the turn of the century.

The official name of the SJMA was approved in June 1987. Dr Yves Manigat and Dr. George Kenner were instrumental in organizing the first meetings of the new ASSOCIATION. Our current membership has increased to over one hundred health professionals.

The ASSOCIATION conducts and participates in various community, civic and health related events throughout the year. We honor and recognize those individuals who have given outstanding service to their community and profession at our annual scholarship/fundraiser in the spring. Past keynote speakers at this gala event have included: Benjamin Carson, M.D., Julian Bond, Tony Brown, Maya Angelou, Lani Guinier, Esq., and Mae Jemison, M.D.

The organization emphasizes the importance of higher education and attempts to encourage and interact with our students and schools. A mentoring program with area high school students has begun. In addition, we award annual scholarships to minority high school seniors going on to college who exhibit outstanding potential.

The ASSOCIATION seeks to remain a vital and important organization for its members and the community we serve. We are a federal tax exempt corporation.
